How much does powder coating cost?
There is no flat price sheet for powder coating, because every part is different. What a shop charges comes down to a handful of factors:
- Size & surface area. Bigger parts use more powder and more labor to prep, hang, and coat.
- Prep work. Sandblasting, chemical stripping, and outgassing cast metal all add real time before any color goes on.
- Number of colors. A single color is straightforward; two-tone work — common on wheels — is far more labor because of masking and multiple cures.
- Finish. A candy or clear topcoat means a second trip through the oven, which adds cost.
- Complexity & reach. Deep wheel barrels, tight corners, and intricate parts take longer to coat evenly.
- Minimum charge. Small parts still need a full oven cycle, so most shops set a job minimum.
The calculator above uses average rates to give a starting point. The price a real shop charges depends on its own labor rate, margin, and powder cost — which is exactly what Powdr Quote builds your quotes from, so you stop underpricing. New to it? Powder coating cost FAQ
- How much does it cost to powder coat wheels?
- A single-color wheel usually runs about $75–150 each at average shop rates, and a two-tone wheel typically $175–300. Larger diameters, heavy prep (stripping old coating or corrosion), and candy finishes push that higher. Use the calculator above for a ballpark, or get an exact number from your own costs with Powdr Quote.
- How much does it cost to powder coat a bumper?
- A car or truck bumper is typically about $150–300 in a single color, depending on size, prep, and finish. Chrome or rusted bumpers that need stripping and blasting cost more because of the extra labor. Note: most modern plastic bumper covers can’t be powder coated — only metal bumpers.
- How much to powder coat a frame?
- A bare single-color motorcycle frame is often around $250–350; once you add stripping and a two-stage finish it runs $400–500+, and a full car frame is significantly more. Frames take real labor to prep, hang, and coat evenly, so size and condition drive the price.
- Why is there a minimum charge for powder coating?
- Every job — big or small — needs prep, masking, hanging, and a full oven cycle. That fixed effort is why even a tiny bracket has a minimum: the oven and labor cost the same whether it is one small part or a full rack.
- What makes a powder coating job cost more?
- The big drivers are surface area, prep (sandblasting, chemical stripping, outgassing cast metal), the number of colors (two-tone is much more labor), candy or clear topcoats that need a second cure, and hard-to-reach areas like deep wheel barrels.
